Large tents might not be the best for use when one person backpacking, but they are fantastic for car camping and big outings. You’ll find the basics like water free interiors, ease of setup, and durability apply to big tents just as much as they apply to small tents, but there are some additional factors that need to be considered. On this page I’ll go over these factors so that you can make a better tent purchase. I’ll also tell you about some of my favorite large tents to use.
The first thing you’ll need to think about is how big is big. What I mean by this is you need to figure out how many people and how much gear you will be storing in your tent. You’ll also want to consider how much extra room you’ll actually want.
When people go on large camping trips with just one or two tents, they need to take into consideration that it may rain and all of the campers may be awake and in the tent at once. You don’t want to have everybody packed into a cramped tent in this sort of situation.
Another consideration is how many rooms you want in your tent. You could have a 3 room tent a 2 room tent or even just a large 1 room tent. Many people find that the best tents provide the best of both worlds and choose to get a tent with a tear down wall in the center. This way they are able use the tent for all different types of large camping trips.
Good Large Tents To Consider
One of my favorite large tents is the Eureka Copper Canyon 1512. This tent is 180 square feet and has a center height of over 7 feet. The tent can hold 12 people on cots and can be converted into a two room tent. You’ll also find that the tents two doors are designed very well with each one leading in and out of a different room. Many companies make the mistake of designing 2 room tents with only 1 door.
The weight of this tent is almost forty pounds which makes it something that you would not want to take on a hiking trip. Use this tent and your other large tents for car camping and take a smaller and lighter tent on your hiking trips.
This style also comes in six and eight person models for people that don’t need quite as much space. If your looking for some large tents for your next trip, I’d highly recommend you check out the Eureka! Copper Canyon series.
